Job Summary: The Instructional Designer – Technical Writer is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining engaging, accurate, and user-friendly instructional materials and technical documentation that support employee training and development, and internal knowledge management. This role bridges technical expertise with learning theory to produce materials such as manuals, e-learning modules, work instructions, quick reference guides, and job aids for a range of audiences within the manufacturing industry.
Who You Are: - You have a strong foundation in instructional design and technical writing, with the ability to tailor content for various learning styles and skill levels.
- You’re skilled at collaborating with subject matter experts to extract key information and turn it into well-structured, easy-to-understand materials.
- You’re proficient with tools for authoring, publishing, and managing learning content (e.g., Articulate, Adobe Suite, Microsoft Office, Confluence, MadCap Flare).
- You apply adult learning principles and instructional best practices to create materials that are not only informative, but effective.
- You take initiative, seek feedback, and continuously refine your content based on learner needs and business goals.
Key Responsibilities: - Collaborate with subject matter experts (SMEs) to gather technical information and translate it into clear, concise, and engaging instructional content.
- Develop and maintain training materials including manuals, SOPs, e-learning modules, onboarding guides, troubleshooting documents, and instructional videos.
- Apply adult learning principles and instructional design best practices to create effective training programs and materials.
- Use authoring tools (e.g., Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate, Camtasia) and documentation platforms (e.g., Confluence, MadCap Flare, Microsoft Word) to develop and publish content.
- Conduct needs assessments and analyze learning gaps to design targeted training interventions.
- Ensure consistency in tone, format, and terminology across all documentation and training assets.
- Maintain version control and documentation accuracy through regular audits and updates.
- Support project rollout and product launch efforts with training and reference documentation.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of instructional materials and revise content based on feedback and performance metrics.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Experience: - Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design, Technical Communication, Engineering, Education, or related field.
- 2+ years of experience in instructional design and/or technical writing, preferably in a technical, manufacturing, or engineering environment.
- Experience working in rapid growth companies.
- Strong writing, editing, and content structuring skills.
- Proficient in instructional design tools and content management systems.
- Understanding of technical subject matter and the ability to translate complex information into learner-friendly formats.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Excellent attention to detail, organization, and communication skills.
Preferred: - Experience with SCORM/xAPI-compliant learning content.
- Familiarity with LMS platforms (e.g., Moodle, Docebo, SAP Litmos).
- Graphic design or video editing experience is a plus.
- Knowledge of Agile or Lean methodologies.
- This position may require occasional travel to company sites or field locations to gather content or deliver training.
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) skills preferred.
